Israel's Eisenkot Closes in on 67 Recommendations After Arab Joint List Endorsement
The endorsements give Eisenkot a parliamentary majority, but party leaders say he still lacks a clear coalition path.
Gadi Eisenkot secured 67 recommendations from Knesset lawmakers on Thursday, positioning the former Israeli Chief of Staff to replace Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. President Isaac Herzog will assign the mandate to form a government on Sunday, November 8.
The Joint List's Thursday endorsement added 11 lawmakers to Eisenkot's tally, joining Ra'am and 48 lawmakers from Jewish-led parties. This coalition seeks to prevent Netanyahu's return, though potential partners oppose governing with Arab parties.
Netanyahu secured 46 recommendations, falling short of a majority, as seven members of United Torah Judaism withheld support over military exemption legislation. This marks the first time in two decades UTJ declined to back the Likud leader.
Herzog, who described his consultations as "open, candid, and also probing," warned the path to a stable coalition remains uncertain due to mutual vetoes. The chosen candidate receives 28 days to form a government.
President Donald Trump this week said he plans to end US aid to Israel after this year, while a commentator argued the US midterms underscored the "collapse of pro-Israel politics" in America. These shifts add external pressure on the next government.
Isaac Herzog, after completing consultations with all parties represented in the Israeli parliament, announced that he will name a prime minister-designate the day after tomorrow, Sunday.
