The unsubstantiated elected official raised an outcry by stating that the Palestinians had "the right to choose Hamas" in the Gaza Strip, although such a decision would be "deplorable".

Norwegian peace activist Vigdis Bjorvand was among the 14 activists arrested by Israeli forces after they boarded the boat Handala on Saturday evening, which was en route to Gaza with emergency aid.
