Israel Condemns Eastern Libyan Parliament's Policy Flip, Ratification of Turkey Maritime Deal
Israel and Egypt said the ratification has no legal effect as Greece warned the deal could deepen disputes over sea borders and energy rights.
On Tuesday, the Libyan House of Representatives unanimously ratified the Maritime Jurisdiction Memorandum with Turkey, annulling a 2020 resolution that had previously rejected the agreement.
Originally signed by the Government of National Accord in 2019, the agreement delineates new maritime boundaries connecting Turkey and Libya, challenging existing jurisdictions near Greek and Cyprus islands.
Lawmaker Aisha al-Tabalqi stated the HoR approved the deal after specialized committees reviewed detailed provisions. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he "hopes this important decision will be beneficial."
Egypt's Foreign Ministry rejected the ratification on Wednesday, stating it has no legal impact, while the Israeli Foreign Ministry condemned the move as an infringement on regional allies' sovereign rights.
These developments occur amid deepening strategic cooperation between Israel, Greece, and Cyprus, underscored by the Greek parliament's recent launch of an Israel Caucus to address shared regional security interests.
