Ireland Launches EU Presidency Focused on Ukraine, Growth and Child Online Safety
The six-month term will cost up to 185 million euro and bring about 30,000 delegates as Ireland chairs EU talks.
On Wednesday, the Irish Government unveiled its policy program for the six-month EU Council presidency starting in July, prioritizing support for Ukraine, economic competitiveness, and protecting children online.
During the launch at Dublin Castle, Taoiseach Micheál Martin said the State must "work harder" to protect citizens against a backdrop of "increased threat and conflict" in Europe.
Martin proposed a "challenging timeline" for a social media ban for under-16s, noting "age verification will be a key factor" in delivering far greater protection for children online.
The presidency will include 270 meetings for 30,000 delegates, costing between €165 million and €185 million, with total expenses including Garda security estimated at about €300 million.
Priorities also include the State's commitment to "continue to offer unwavering support to Ukraine" and negotiating the next long-term EU budget, as Martin suggested Montenegro could be "very close to the end line" for joining by year-end.
