Iran's New Defense Minister Mehrdad Ketabchi Cautions US
Akhlaghi won 237 votes as lawmakers backed a veteran defense official who replaces a minister killed in joint U.S.-Israeli strikes.
- On Sunday, Iran's Islamic Consultative Assembly confirmed Mehrdad Akhlaghi Ketabchi as Minister of Defense and Armed Forces Logistics. Shortly after, Akhlaghi warned the United States against resuming military campaigns, threatening "enormous damage" to America and its regional allies.
- Akhlaghi, a 68-year-old defense engineer, succeeds former minister Aziz Nasirzadeh, who was killed during a February 28 US-Israeli strike. The veteran official brings 42 years of Defense Ministry experience and previously led the Iranian Defence Industries Organisation.
- Lawmakers approved the nominee with 237 votes in favor and 15 against, out of 277 total votes cast. Ketabchi faces international sanctions from the United States, the United Kingdom, the United Nations, and the European Union for links to Iran's ballistic missile program.
- President Masoud Pezeshkian said the "decisive vote" sent a loud message of unity to the world. National Security Council Secretary Mohsen Rezaei dismissed American threats, claiming Iran has prepared a "more devastating plan" than its 12- and 40-day wars for any new adventure.
- Tehran's focus remains on rebuilding defense-industrial capabilities after two wars, with Akhlaghi emphasizing preparedness for potential future threats. He warned that if American officials' threats become action, "there will be massive damage to both them and the region.
