Iranian national charged in Texas for allegedly smuggling immigrants through Mexico

He allegedly charged migrants up to $30,000 and arranged housing, transport and flights in a network that moved people through South and Central America.

  • On Thursday, Colombian authorities arrested 57-year-old Iranian national Jafar Tafakori in Pereira, Colombia following an unsealed indictment in the Western District of Texas charging him with operating an international smuggling ring.
  • From December 2022 through May 2024, Tafakori allegedly coordinated a logistics network spanning South and Central America, charging migrants fees as high as $30,000 for shelter and transportation before directing them to cross the U.S. border illegally.
  • Prosecutors charged Tafakori with one count of conspiracy and five counts of bringing an alien into the U.S. for financial gain, with each count carrying a maximum 10-year prison sentence.
  • The arrest resulted from a multi-agency effort involving Homeland Security Investigations and the Joint Task Force Alpha; Assistant Attorney General A. Tysen Duva stated that when extradited, "Tafakori will face justice in the United States."
  • Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said, "Securing our borders and stopping alien smuggling is a top priority," while U.S. Attorney Justin R. Simmons emphasized prosecuting those exploiting what he called "derelict open-border policies.
