Iran, Russia ink $25b nuclear power deal ahead of looming UN sanctions

The $25 billion deal with Russia includes four third-generation nuclear plants to add 5,020 megawatts capacity in Hormozgan, supporting Iran’s goal to expand peaceful nuclear energy.

  • On Friday, Iran Hormoz Company and Rosatom signed a $25 billion executive agreement in Moscow to build four Generation III nuclear units in Sirik, Hormozgan.
  • Facing renewed pressure from Britain, France and Germany, the signing came just hours before expected renewed United Nations sanctions on Iran.
  • Each new unit will deliver 1,255 megawatts, totaling 5,020 megawatts on a 500-hectare site in Kuhestak district, Sirik, signed by Nasser Mansour Shariflou and Dmitry Shiganov with Kazem Jalali present.
  • The project will enter contract and design phases within days, with AEOI officials saying operational steps are now underway to boost Iran's civilian nuclear capacity and Tehran–Moscow energy cooperation.
  • If no agreement is reached by September 27, all UN sanctions will be reimposed, while China and Russia seek a six-month extension at the United Nations Security Council.
