Iran Signals Internet Return as State Television Is Briefly Hacked
Iran may restore internet service after a nationwide blackout used to suppress protests that reportedly caused over 5,000 deaths, officials said.
- Ebrahim Azizi said top security bodies will decide when Iran restores internet, with service resuming 'as soon as security conditions are appropriate'.
- Anti-Government protests that began in late December were put down within three days amid widespread violence, leaving streets largely quiet for about a week and marking the most serious unrest since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
- Late on Jan 18, Iranian state television appeared hacked, briefly airing speeches by US President Donald Trump and Reza Pahlavi under the headline `The real news of the Iranian national revolution`.
- The blackout has since been partially eased, allowing accounts of widespread attacks on protesters to emerge, while an Iranian official told Reuters the confirmed death toll exceeds more than 5,000, including 500 members of the security forces.
- Opponents and authorities traded competing narratives as MP Hamid Rasaei said authorities should have listened to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei about `lax cyberspace`, amid threats from Mr Trump that have since subsided.
