Iran narrowly knocked out of tumultuous World Cup on Austria's last-second goal
Austria’s stoppage-time equalizer sent Iran out after it finished third in Group G with 3 points.
Iran's World Cup run ended Saturday night after an Austria-Algeria draw on the game's final play, leaving the squad in third place in World Cup Group G despite earning three points.
Throughout the tournament, the team faced significant travel restrictions imposed by the United States; while based in Tijuana, Mexico, officials allowed the squad to travel to Seattle only two days before their final match against Egypt.
Iran coach Amir Ghalenoei criticized the team's treatment, citing visa denials and quick departures. After Friday's draw with Egypt, Ghalenoei said, "We were treated very, very badly."
The squad narrowly failed to advance past the group stage, missing the round of 32 by one spot. Had they progressed, the team would have played its next match in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Tensions continued Saturday as Tehran negotiated with Washington to end the war that began earlier this year, while Iran launched a drone assault on Bahrain, prompting the United States to strike Iranian military targets near the Strait of Hormuz.
The eight best third-placed teams advance to the knockout phase of the World Cup, while the four worst are eliminated. Due to Austria's goal in the final seconds against Algeria (3-3), Iran narrowly misses out on a ticket to the round of 32.
