Iran Intercepts US MQ-1 Drone East of Strait of Hormuz
Iran says the drone was conducting reconnaissance of its air defenses and released video it says shows the recovery after an electronic warfare operation.
On Thursday, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed to have captured an MQM-170C Outlaw drone west of the Strait of Hormuz, releasing infrared footage it says shows the aircraft being tracked and recovered.
Pentagon announcements previously linked the MQM-170 series to Operation Epic Fury before quietly deleting the reference, while Griffon Aerospace designs these systems as configurable platforms for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions.
U.S. Central Command has not confirmed the loss, and Navy Capt. Tim Hawkins, the command's spokesperson, stated the IRGC "has repeatedly lied out of desperation, and today is no different."
Last month, Iran recovered an Anduril Dive-LD uncrewed underwater vehicle largely intact, which U.S. authorities confirmed was lost due to a malfunction, establishing a pattern of Iranian recoveries.
Growing signs suggest the United States and Israel are preparing for a potential campaign against Iran, with stimulating Iranian air defenses remaining critical for gathering intelligence before major military operations.
IRGC intercepted an U.S. MQM-170 drone in the Strait of Ormuz, reported by Tasnim. According to information, the drone mission was to identify Iranian air defence capabilities.
