Yesterday, the Amsterdam UMC was the first in the world to treat a patient with a new, 'custom-made' Parkinson's treatment method. This was done with adaptive brain stimulation, in which electrodes send pulses to the brain when the patient's brain itself asks for it. 'A very special day', says Martijn Beudel, neurologist at the Amsterdam UMC.

A 47-year-old man was the first in the world to be treated outside of a study setting with a new technique for the symptoms of Parkinson's disease, Amsterdam UMC reports. This technique is called Adaptive DBS (aDBS) and delivers so-called pulses (shocks) to the brain when necessary.
