Inuit group calls for overhaul of Nutrition North, poverty reduction frameworks
ITK says Nutrition North has failed to improve food security and wants a new Inuit-led program with stable funding and stronger accountability.
- On Tuesday, Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami released a new poverty reduction strategy calling for the federal government to scrap Nutrition North, arguing the subsidy program is ineffective across the region.
- The program has failed to improve food security across 124 communities through fragmented approaches. Retailers have faced accusations of not applying full subsidies to items they sell.
- Data shows about 41 per cent of families in Inuit Nunangat experienced poverty in 2023. Non-Indigenous Canadians in the region earn a median income of $100,000, compared to about $32,000 for Inuit.
- The strategy proposes an Inuit-led program with stable, long-term funding to replace current subsidies. ITK president Natan Obed stated, "If the government of Canada is going to spend upwards of $200 million on food security in the North, we believe that those who need it most should be the ones that benefit."
- Obed warned that failing to reduce poverty while securing the Arctic risks repeating 1950s sovereignty failures when Canada relocated Inuit communities. The strategy also supports Inuit Nunangat University, set to open in 2030.
