Interview. Medical Deserts: "It is illusory to think that we will have a doctor per commune"

In consultation with the community of communes, the Department will open a health centre in Bitche, next July. A three-year experiment, which will seek to solve (in part) the medical desertification affecting the sector. About ten professionals, including three general practitioners, will train the medical team, which will be paid.

Medical deserts are one of the concerns of the French in their daily lives and some MPs hope to shift the installation of doctors to the underfunded areas through a law. François-Xavier Schweyer, professor of sociology at the École des hautes études en santé publique, explains to us the evolution of the population of health professionals in recent decades.

As of Tuesday, MPs are to consider a trans-party bill to strengthen access to care. Doctors are standing up against any constraint to the installation. The text divides, even within the executive. François Bayrou is to make announcements this week.
