Mali government reports rebel attacks targeting northern towns
The assaults targeted government and Russian-backed forces and left no immediate casualty reports, officials and residents said.
On Saturday at 5:00 a.m., insurgents from the al-Qaeda-linked JNIM and the Azawad Liberation Front launched coordinated assaults across five Malian locations: Gao, Anefis, Aguelhok, Sevare, and a prison in Kenieroba.
Following the Wagner Group's withdrawal in June 2025, the FLA and JNIM allied against Mali's army and its Russian partners, the Africa Corps, establishing the operational foundation for these coordinated strikes.
FLA spokesperson Mohamed Elmaouloud Ramadane confirmed the offensive, stating "several positions have fallen, but fighting still underway inside the city" of Anefis while government and Russian forces mounted resistance.
Inside the Kenieroba prison, inmates sheltered under their beds as gunfire continued, while security sources observed aircraft flying over the region shortly after the initial 5:00 a.m. strikes.
This escalation mirrors April attacks that killed the defense minister and led to the seizure of Kidal, signaling systematic erosion of military government control over northern outposts and the capital, Bamako.
At least five places in Mali are said to have been attacked by militant groups, including a prison near the capital Bamako. The military junta is silent.
These events occurred more than two months after large-scale attacks by the Islamic and Muslim Support Group (GSIM), which had considerably weakened the ruling junta in Bamako and killed the defence minister.
