Makinde Restricts Night-Time 'Okada' Operations, Signs Executive Order to Boost Security
The curfew on okada riders is part of new security measures as authorities seek to rescue about 39 abducted schoolchildren and seven teachers.
- On Friday, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde signed an Executive Order restricting commercial motorcycle operations between 10:30 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. daily to strengthen public safety and combat criminal activities across the state.
- The directive follows the May 15 abduction of about 39 schoolchildren and seven teachers in Oriire Local Government Area near Ogbomoso, with victims held for over 20 days after abductors beheaded mathematics teacher Michael Oyedokun.
- Amid growing pressure to free the victims, the Oyo State House of Assembly rejected negotiations with abductors on Wednesday, insisting the government must not encourage criminality, while the Nigeria Union of Teachers embarked on an indefinite strike on June 1 demanding immediate rescue.
- Makinde urged residents to report security threats via toll-free emergency line 615, while enforcement authorities now have power to arrest offenders and impound unregistered vehicles, motorcycles and tricycles operating illegally.
- Governor Makinde assured families his administration remains fully committed to securing the victims' safe return and commended the Amotekun Corps for their professionalism, acknowledging that nearly 200 personnel have been killed over six years.
