Indian Navy Commissions a Mother Ship for Deep-Diving Rescue Subs
VISAKHAPATNAM, ANDHRA PRADESH, INDIA, JUL 18 – INS Nistar features over 80% indigenous content and supports deep saturation diving up to 300 meters, enhancing India's submarine rescue and underwater operational capabilities, officials said.
- On July 18, 2025 , the Indian Navy commissioned INS Nistar at the Naval Dockyard in Visakhapatnam.
- Built by Hindustan Shipyard Limited, INS Nistar marks a generational leap in India’s naval infrastructure under the Make in India initiative.
- INS Nistar serves as the mothership for the DSRV, enabling rescue at depths up to 1,000 metres, and houses a medical complex with an OT, ICU and eight-bed hospital alongside a hyperbaric diving system.
- The vessel positions India among navies with independent rescue capabilities, addressing the need for sovereign underwater infrastructure amid security challenges and reducing reliance on foreign platforms.
- This expansion positions India as a 'Preferred Submarine Rescue Partner' in the region, supporting undersea emergencies through INS Nistar's capabilities at the Eastern Naval Command.
