High Court Orders New Inquest Into Jools Sweeney’s Death
Judges said new evidence on social media and possible sextortion justifies reopening the case, after the original inquest lasted only 23 minutes.
On Thursday, the High Court quashed the 2022 narrative conclusion into the death of 14-year-old Jools Sweeney, ordering a new inquest after legal action by his mother, Ellen Roome.
Lawyers representing Roome argued that new evidence concerning social media, particularly TikTok, was not pursued at the original inquest; the coroner and TikTok did not oppose the reopening bid.
Evidence presented includes data suggesting TikTok overuse and a "possible attempt at extortion or 'sextortion'" via a fraudulent Instagram account; several significant lines of inquiry were never pursued in 2022.
Separately, Ofcom launched an investigation into TikTok on Thursday, citing "particular concerns about the effectiveness of TikTok's approach to age assurance" regarding children's content exposure.
Ellen Roome described the ruling as a "turning point" in making the "online world safer for every child." Among five British parents suing TikTok in the United States, she continues campaigning for legal changes on data access.
