PHILIPPINES, JUL 16 – Tropical Depression Crising, the third cyclone this year, may intensify into a severe tropical storm, bringing heavy rain and strong winds to northern Luzon and nearby regions, PAGASA said.
- On Wednesday, July 16, PAGASA reported that a low-pressure area within the country’s designated monitoring zone developed into Tropical Depression Crising, located east of Catanduanes.
- Crising formed amid the country's frequent storms and an increasingly unpredictable climate causing losses equivalent to 0.5% of annual economic output.
- The tropical depression moved westward at 10–20 kph, with maximum sustained winds increasing from 45 to 55 kph and gusts up to 70 kph as it intensified over the Philippine Sea.
- Strong winds stretch up to 280 km from the center of Crising, and PAGASA forecasts it will strengthen to tropical storm status by Thursday morning, with the likelihood of escalating to a severe tropical storm by Friday evening as it nears northern Luzon.
- Crising is enhancing the southwest monsoon, bringing heavy rain and gale-force gusts, causing rough seas and flooding risks, while it may exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Saturday evening.
