Hawks Star, Two Giants Hurt in Night of Carnage at MCG
Hawthorn’s midfield controlled stoppages as GWS lost Brent Daniels and Max Gruzewski to injuries and Nick Watson exited after half-time.
On Friday, Hawthorn defeated the decimated GWS Giants 14.12 to 12.10 at the MCG, though the win was soured by a hamstring injury to star forward Nick Watson.
The Giants' injury crisis deepened during the second quarter when forward Max Gruzewski suffered a dislocated patella and teammate Brent Daniels limped off with a calf concern, leaving 15 players sidelined.
Hawthorn dominated the midfield battle, winning clearances 54-29 behind strong performances from Jai Newcombe, Will Day, and Cam Mackenzie, who consistently forced the opposition to defend for extended periods.
Despite the defeat, out-of-contract Toby Greene remained dangerous, recording 24 disposals and two goals, though the Giants now face an uphill battle to qualify for the wildcard round with a 6-9 record.
Sitting third with a 10-1-4 record, Hawthorn prepares for a clash against Melbourne in Launceston next Saturday as the club aims to maintain its position and Watson's fitness status remains uncertain.
