INEOS Opens EU's First Full-Scale Carbon Storage Site in Denmark

- On Friday, energy group INEOS announced its Greensand project has begun storing carbon dioxide beneath the North Sea, marking the EU's first full-scale CO2 storage site in operation.
- Located 200 kilometres off the Danish west coast, the Greensand reservoir lies beneath the old Nini West oil platform and will store 400,000 tonnes of CO2 annually in its first phase.
- Sourced primarily from Danish biomethane plants, the CO2 is transported by ship from Esbjerg, with INEOS intending to scale capacity to eight million tonnes annually by 2030.
- European Commissioner for Energy Dan Jorgensen stressed that "carbon storage is a practical reality," emphasizing the project enables industries to transition to a low-carbon future while maintaining employment.
- Under the Net-Zero Industry Act , the EU targets at least 50 million tonnes of storage capacity by 2030, while neighbouring Norway's Northern Lights service conducted its first CO2 injection in August 2025.
