Nigeria: INEC Wades Into PDP Leadership Crisis, Summons Factions
INEC held an emergency meeting with PDP factions to resolve leadership conflicts amid preparations for the February 2026 FCT Area Council elections and off-cycle governorship polls.
- On Friday, the Independent National Electoral Commission summoned the Tanimu Turaki-led and Nyesom Wike-backed Abdulrahman Mohammed PDP factions to an emergency meeting at its Abuja headquarters.
- INEC said it acted after receiving 'conflicting correspondences' from the Peoples Democratic Party and stressed the need for clarity as preparations intensify for the FCT Area Council and 2026 off-cycle governorship elections.
- Turaki attended the meeting with his National Working Committee and Babangida Aliyu, while Mohammed brought his caretaker committee including Senator Sam Anyanwu; INEC said it will manage the issue within the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Electoral Act and INEC regulations.
- The meeting is intended to clarify Peoples Democratic Party leadership and secure compliance with Independent National Electoral Commission election rules ahead of the FCT Area Council elections in February, 2026 and Ekiti governorship election in June 2026.
- Resolving the dispute, INEC said, will shape which faction represents the Peoples Democratic Party in candidate nominations and affect electoral preparations for the FCT and 2026 off-cycle elections.
