IndiGo to purchase 30 more wide-body A350 planes
IndiGo plans to operate 60 Airbus A350-900 jets starting 2027 to expand long-haul international routes and compete with major global carriers, officials said.
- On Friday, IndiGo formalised an order for 30 additional Airbus A350-900 widebody aircraft, doubling its widebody fleet commitment from 30 to 60 planes.
- Earlier, IndiGo had placed its first widebody order in April 2024 for 30 A350-900s and retained purchase rights for 70 aircraft, with an MoU signed at the IATA annual meeting in Delhi this year converted into a firm contract this week.
- Deliveries will begin in 2027 with a second batch in the early 2030s, all A350-900s powered by Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines, which Airbus said offer superior fuel efficiency and comfort.
- The move positions IndiGo to compete directly with Air India, Emirates, and Qatar Airways as it recently introduced business-class cabins and a frequent flyer program.
- With an A350 range of around 15,000 kilometres and plans for 10 new international destinations in 2025-26, IndiGo's order supports non-stop long-haul expansion.
