India's Zee sues Reliance-Disney over alleged music copyright breach
On April 14, Zee Entertainment Enterprises filed a lawsuit in New Delhi against the Reliance-Disney joint venture JioStar, seeking $3 million in damages for alleged unauthorized use of copyrighted music after licensing agreements expired.
Zee alleges JioStar used its music at least 50 times since 2024 after licensing agreements lapsed; disagreements over commercial terms prevented renewal. JioStar 'categorically rejects' the claims, stating it has 'taken extensive steps to remove any infringing content across its portfolio.'
During a hearing on Tuesday, the Delhi High Court directed JioStar to ensure no further infringement of Zee's works and comply within 15 days. The next hearing is scheduled for July 23.
Separately, Zee filed a lawsuit against FSN E-Commerce Ventures, owner of retailer Nykaa, seeking $210,000 in damages for allegedly using copyrighted songs in promotional Instagram reels without proper licensing.
Rising tensions underscore separate arbitration proceedings in London, where Reliance is seeking $1 billion from Zee over a cricket rights agreement, highlighting broader consolidation conflicts in India's media market.
