Indian Navy Launches Advanced Ocean Research Vessel ‘ORV Sagar Manthan’
The Rs 840-crore vessel will support deep-sea surveys, marine mineral exploration and blue economy research, officials said.
- On Wednesday, Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers launched 'Sagar Manthan', an indigenous ocean research vessel built for the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research to enhance India's deep-sea exploration capabilities.
- Part of the government's Deep Ocean Mission, the vessel was launched at Rishi Bankim Shipyard barely five months after its keel was laid, highlighting accelerated construction, Earth Sciences Secretary Srinivasa Kumar Tummala said.
- The 5,900-tonne vessel will conduct seismic surveys at depths of up to 6 km and is equipped with AUVs and ROVs for research operations. Tummala described the ship as providing an "unparalleled" capability for geophysical research.
- Designed for severe sea states, the vessel will operate across the Indian Ocean, Bay of Bengal, and Southern Ocean, conducting Conductivity, Temperature and Depth profiling and atmospheric observations.
- Expected to be ready by early 2028, the ₹840-crore project will support marine resource exploration and ocean-linked sectors. Tummala added it will be a "big feather in the research fleet of our ministry.
