Indiana Senate’s No. 2 Republican steps down from post after split from Bray
Garten said he no longer felt aligned with leadership after the failed redistricting fight, and Republicans may soon face a challenge to Bray.
On Thursday, Indiana Senate Majority Floor Leader Chris Garten resigned from his leadership post, stepping down from the second-ranking position in the Senate Republican caucus effective immediately.
The resignation follows lingering fallout from last year's failed redistricting fight, which split Garten from Senate President Pro Tem Rodric Bray; Garten backed the effort while Bray opposed it.
In his resignation letter, Garten stated that serving as Floor Leader "requires a seamless alignment with the current strategic direction of leadership"—an alignment he no longer maintains.
Speculation mounts that Garten could challenge Bray for the top spot, a position President Donald Trump has targeted by calling Bray a "wet blanket."
Republican senators, who hold a 40-10 majority, will not formally decide on chamber leadership until after the November election, with at least nine members not returning in 2027.
