- On Sunday , Sahil Mohammad Hussain, a 23-year-old student from Morbi, Gujarat, appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for help in videos circulated by Ukrainian authorities.
- Majothi travelled to St Petersburg on January 10, 2024, on a student visa to study at ITMO University and says Russian police implicated him in a narcotics case, sentencing him to seven years and offering military service to avoid jail.
- After around 15 days of training, Sahil says recruiters promised payments up to 1.5 million and claimed at least 700 people were jailed then pushed to join, and he surrendered to Ukrainian troops.
- His mother has filed a petition in the Delhi High Court seeking his safe return, while Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said on December 5 India is actively pursuing releases and PM Narendra Modi raised the recruitment issue with President Vladimir Putin.
- Officials have repeatedly warned citizens that of 202 Indian citizens recruited into the Russian military, 26 were killed, seven are missing, 119 discharged, and efforts continue for 50.
