Indian sailor dies from medical complications aboard tanker in Oman
The crew and a maritime union allege delayed medical help as the 35-year-old second officer died, and the Indian embassy is arranging repatriation.
On Thursday, 35-year-old Indian seafarer Nishanth Uirthanathan died of medical complications aboard the tanker MT Celestial at Oman's Duqm Port; the Indian Embassy is coordinating repatriation of his remains.
The Forward Seamen's Union of India alleged the death occurred 'due to lack of timely medical support,' while Romana Ship Management rejected negligence claims, citing an earlier dispute over the vessel's route to Shinas.
Crew members reported the body remained onboard for over two days without proper refrigeration, forcing them to use cold water bottles to slow decomposition; the union called this a 'horrifying and health-risking situation.'
Recent U.S. strikes on commercial vessels including the MT Settebello and MT Jalveer have intensified diplomatic protests, highlighting vulnerability of more than 18,000 Indian seafarers employed in the Middle East.
With India's maritime workforce exceeding 300,000 across global fleets, the conflict in West Asia poses severe risks to civilian shipping amid ongoing naval escalations near the Strait of Hormuz.
