Indian-Origin NASA Astronaut Anil Menon Embarks on Maiden 6.5-Hour ISS Spacewalk
Menon and Jessica Meir are set for a 6.5-hour EVA to ready the station for future solar arrays and orbiting research tasks.
- On Thursday, Indian-origin NASA astronaut Anil Menon conducted his first-ever spacewalk outside the International Space Station, joined by American astronaut Jessica Meir for Spacewalk 96.
- Before becoming an astronaut, Menon served as an emergency medicine physician and a colonel in the Space Force, having previously supported four long-duration crew members on the ISS as deputy crew surgeon for Soyuz 39 and Soyuz 43.
- Lasting about six and a half hours, the mission prepares the orbital laboratory for future installation of the International Space Station Roll-Out Solar Array and the 3B power channel.
- Research tasks during the mission include ultrasound investigations using augmented reality and testing technologies to produce intravenous fluids, advancing medical capabilities for astronauts on the ISS.
- Born in Minneapolis to Ukrainian and Indian immigrants, Menon previously served as a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar in India and began his three spacewalks after completing two years of initial NASA training.
