Indian Navy to Commission Indigenous Warship Samarthak on October 16

The first of four indigenously built multi-purpose vessels is designed for surveillance, patrol, trials support and humanitarian assistance.

  • On October 16, the Indian Navy will commission INS Samarthak, its first indigenous Multi-Purpose Vessel, at Naval Base Karwar in Karnataka, officials announced Tuesday.
  • Built by Larsen & Toubro under the Union government's 'Make in India' initiative, the warship represents India's drive toward defence self-reliance as the first of four vessels being inducted.
  • Designed for maritime surveillance and patrol, the vessel features an integrated combat suite and supports Low Intensity Maritime Operations , target deployment, and Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief missions.
  • Officials described the vessel as an ideal 'utility' ship for strategic operations, capable of conversion into a limited-capacity hospital ship, with its motto 'Victory is Our Sole Aim.'
  • The induction of INS Samarthak strengthens the Navy's operational flexibility while advancing indigenisation of naval systems, forming a crucial component of future maritime requirements as the fleet expands.
