INDIA, JUN 09 – The Defence Ministry is set to approve three regiments of the indigenous QRSAM system worth Rs 30,000 crore to enhance air defence after recent drone and missile threats, officials said.
- The Defence Acquisition Council plans to meet in late June 2025 to approve a Rs 30,000 crore deal for three regiments of indigenous QRSAM air defence missile systems.
- This proposal follows the successful interception of Pakistani Turkish-origin drones and Chinese missiles during Operation Sindoor from May 7 to 10, 2025.
- The QRSAM system, developed by DRDO and produced by Bharat Electronics and Bharat Dynamics, offers highly mobile, on-the-move target search, track, and fire capabilities with approximately 30 km range.
- According to a source, the QR-SAM systems are highly mobile, able to detect and engage targets while relocating, and can launch missiles during brief pauses, thereby enhancing the existing platforms such as MRSAM and Akash.
- The acquisition will strengthen India's multi-layered air defence along western and northern borders, enhancing readiness against aerial threats including drones and missiles.
