Odisha's Green Energy Vision: A Roadmap to 2036

The rooftop solar initiative under PM Surya Ghar Yojana will benefit over 7 lakh people in Odisha, focusing on economically weaker sections, announced at GELS 2025.

  • On Saturday, Pralhad Joshi, Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy, said India recorded its highest-ever non-fossil capacity addition of more than 4,500 per cent, including solar.
  • Facing large coal reserves and high consumption, India balances coal with renewables as the transition gathers pace, reflecting its status as the world’s fifth-largest coal reserve holder and second-largest consumer.
  • Data show a rapid expansion in solar, with solar capacity rising from 2.8 GW to around 130 GW over 11 years and India contributing 46 GW to global solar additions between 2022 and 2024.
  • Under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana, the government will deliver 1.5 lakh rooftop solar units for Odisha, benefiting over 7 lakh people through the consumer-owned New Utility Led Aggregation Model.
  • Amid shifting global competitiveness rules, India’s renewable expansion gains urgency as the world hit 2 TW by 2024 after nearly 70 years to reach 1 TW in 2022.
