India has undertaken this week the Home America task of counting the population of the most populous country in the world. Succession of figures echoes: three million officials will comb for one year its 28 states, 7,000 cities and 640,000 villages to complete a census that will cost $1.24 billion. Its results will serve to recalibrate economic strategy, social policies and parliamentary representation.
India launched on Wednesday 1 April a large-scale census, involving three million agents for a year. An operation is expected to confirm that the country is outnumbering China as the most populous nation in the world, with nearly 1.5 billion inhabitants. The results will be known in March 2027.
