Mexico Set to Auction Land Where Drug Kingpin ‘El Mencho’ Was Killed
The parcel is one of 211 properties up for auction and has a starting price of about US$750,000, authorities said.
- On Monday, the Mexican government announced the auction of land within Tapalpa Country Club where drug kingpin Nemesio Oseguera, known as El Mencho, died during a February clash with the army in Jalisco.
- Mexican special forces found Oseguera Cervantes 'hidden in the undergrowth' after tracking one of his romantic partners to his hideout, with U.S. intelligence assisting the operation that killed the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.
- El Mencho's death triggered cartel retaliation across two-thirds of the country through roadblocks and vehicle fires, killing dozens including 25 members of Mexico's National Guard; authorities discovered a crucifix and handwritten psalm in his home.
- Authorities stopped short of directly linking the property to El Mencho; the cartel leader received a ceremonial burial in March in Zapopan with a golden casket, while successor candidate Audias Flores Silva, known as El Jardinero, faced a $5 million U.S. reward.
- Last month, the cartel suffered another setback when a top leader was captured in a roadside ditch; last week, U.S. prosecutors expanded charges against Silva for methamphetamine trafficking and money laundering, as Thursday's auction of 211 properties continues Mexico's asset seizure campaign.
