Chelsea Sign Defender Palestra From Atalanta
Chelsea paid a reported £43 million for the 21-year-old wing-back after his loan at Cagliari and Serie A defender of the year award.
On Wednesday, Chelsea signed Italy full back Marco Palestra from Atalanta on a seven-year deal, bolstering the squad under new manager Xabi Alonso.
UEFA urged Chelsea on Tuesday to "significantly decrease" squad costs after repeated financial rule breaches; the club sold Marc Cucurella for 60 million euros to ease financial pressure.
Palestra, 21, signed a seven-year contract for 43 million pounds after earning Serie A defender of the year honors during a loan at Cagliari.
Alonso's preferred formation features wing backs, a role Palestra fills effectively. "He has spoken to me about how he wants us to play, which is exciting," the defender said.
Facing a significant revenue drop after failing to qualify for European competition, Chelsea adds a defender who recorded the fastest sprints in Serie A this year.
