Hundreds of Young Invasive Carp Found Closer to Lake Michigan Than Ever Before, Just as Work Has Stopped on Billion-Dollar Barrier
Crews removed several hundred 4-to-6-inch fish, the first young silver carp found that far upriver since monitoring began in 2010.
- On Thursday and Friday, Illinois Department of Natural Resources crews removed several hundred juvenile silver carp from the Illinois River's Marseilles Pool, located 80 miles from Lake Michigan.
- Biologists suspect a recent spawning event occurred further upriver, as this discovery marks the closest juvenile silver carp have been found to Lake Michigan since monitoring began in 2010.
- Workers are implementing "intensive electrofishing" in backwater habitats to understand the fish's origin, while increasing monitoring in the Dresden Island Pool, about 50 miles from Lake Michigan.
- The Army Corps of Engineers halted construction on the Brandon Road Lock and Dam Complex last month, with the project remaining "under administrative review" by the Trump administration.
- "Every day we don't have shovels in the ground at the Brandon Road project puts us a day closer to seeing invasive carp cause irreversible harm," said Joel Brammeier, Alliance for the Great Lakes president and CEO.
