Illinois Approves Aid-in-Dying Bill
Illinois joins 11 states in legalizing assisted suicide with over 20 safeguards for terminally ill patients to end suffering, lawmakers say.
- On Friday, the Illinois legislature approved the End-of-Life Options for Terminally Ill Patients Act, allowing terminally ill patients to obtain medication for self-administration.
- Sponsor Sen. Linda Holmes said the bill lets adults 18 or older diagnosed with six months or less to live self-administer prescribed medication, introduced in the 2025 spring legislative session.
- The bill requires over 20 safeguards, including confirmation from two physicians, mental-competency evaluations, waiting periods, and written consent, while pharmacies may opt out so only a few dispense the drugs.
- The bill now goes to Governor JB Pritzker, who has 60 days to sign, veto or let it become law, and if approved Illinois would join 11 other states and Washington, D.C.
- Medical groups and critics argued the bill violates physicians' `do no harm` oath and Rep. Bill Hauter blasted the late-night 2 a.m. vote and insurance-driven cost concerns.
