Illinois joined WHO’s Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network to maintain direct access to outbreak intelligence and public health resources after the U.S. withdrawal from WHO.
- On Tuesday, the Illinois Department of Public Health officially joined the World Health Organization's Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network to counterbalance the federal withdrawal, Pritzker announced.
- Following the U.S. withdrawal on January 22, Illinois joined GOARN last month, and California, the first state to do so, followed later, officials said.
- Illinois officials say the membership provides access to research, timely alerts, risk assessments, and trainings, while Dr. Sameer Vohra highlighted contributions like genomic sequencing and wastewater surveillance at O'Hare International Airport.
- By joining GOARN Illinois will get direct, real-time alerts rather than waiting for federal relay, strengthening preparedness at no cost, Illinois Department of Public Health said.
