Police Watchdog Investigating in-Custody Event in Pitt Meadows
The police watchdog is reviewing whether officer actions or inaction caused serious harm after a detainee was taken to hospital.
The Independent Investigations Office is investigating a case where a man was allegedly injured while in the custody of Pitt Meadows RCMP.
After arresting the man for theft on May 29, officers found he violated a court release order and placed him in a cell; they later re-entered due to safety concerns.
Following the cell interaction, the man complained of an injury and was transported by ambulance to a hospital for assessment and treatment, prompting the RCMP to notify The IIO the following day.
The IIO determines whether the injury meets the threshold of 'serious harm' as defined by the Police Act and examines officer conduct; Charges can be laid if warranted.
