IIO investigating after man taken to hospital following Saanich arrest
The watchdog is examining whether the man’s injuries meet the Police Act serious harm threshold after officers used less-lethal weapons and a police dog.
- The Independent Investigations Office of BC launched an investigation into a Friday, Sept. 18 arrest by the Saanich Police Department involving deployment of "less-lethal use of force weapons and a police service dog."
- Responding to a possible assault call at a Woodhall Drive home shortly after 10 p.m., officers negotiated and contained the area for several hours before the man exited the residence.
- Members of the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team assisted the operation, and after the man was taken into custody, he was transported to hospital for assessment and treatment of his injuries.
- The IIO will determine whether the man's injuries meet the "serious harm" threshold as defined by the Police Act and whether police actions contributed to those injuries.
