IIO investigating after man taken to hospital following Saanich arrest
The watchdog is weighing whether the man’s injuries meet the Police Act serious-harm threshold and is seeking witnesses to the arrest.
The Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia is investigating a Saanich arrest on Woodhall Drive on September 18.
Saanich police responded to a possible assault call shortly after 10 p.m., with support from the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team.
After several hours of negotiations, police arrested the man using less-lethal weapons and a police service dog, and he was taken to hospital for injury assessment and treatment.
The IIO is seeking witnesses and assessing whether the injuries qualify as serious harm and whether police actions or inaction were connected.
