Zelenskyy shows first footage of new interceptor drones destroying jet-powered Shaheds
Zelenskyy said the Security Service of Ukraine developed the drone, and he shared footage after it was used successfully against Russian jet-powered Shaheds.
- On Saturday, Sept. 19, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Ukraine has deployed a new interceptor drone to counter Russian jet-powered Shahed strike drones, following an operational briefing from acting Head of the Security Service of Ukraine Oleksandr Poklad.
- In recent months, Russian forces have escalated launches of jet-powered Geran-4 and Banderol munitions, traveling at speeds between 400 and 600 kilometers per hour, rendering traditional mobile anti-aircraft teams and propeller-driven interceptors ineffective.
- Long-Range weapons caused 47 percent of civilian casualties in August, with 194 killed, while short-range tactical drones accounted for 30 percent of total casualties nationwide, particularly in frontline communities such as Kherson.
- The Security Service of Ukraine developed the interceptor, which Zelenskyy stated has "already been successfully deployed." Approximately 10 other domestic manufacturers are conducting flight and intercept tests before formal military codification.
- Ukrainian defense planners prioritized interceptor drones as a cost-effective countermeasure to relieve pressure on ground-based air defenses. "We are moving forward step by step to provide Ukraine with greater protection," the President noted.
