According to scientists and conservationists, the mackerel catch in the Northeast Atlantic must be drastically reduced to preserve the species. The international scientific organization ICES recommends a 77 percent reduction for next year compared to the estimated 2025 catch. Following this recommendation, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) is urging all countries in the region to "finally adhere to the scientific catch limits and stop overfishing."
The International Council for the Exploration of the Sea has issued advice on fishing for Norwegian-Icelandic herring, mackerel and blue whiting for the year 2026. The council recommends a 70 percent reduction in fishing for mackerel compared to the current year and a 41 percent reduction in fishing for blue whiting. In contrast, a one-third increase is recommended for fishing for Norwegian-Icelandic spring-spawning herring.
