ICE Shooting in Bronx Sparks New York Protests and Political Clash
The shooting, captured on video, left a 28-year-old wounded and triggered a clash over ICE tactics and sanctuary city policies.
An Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent shot 28-year-old Dominican national Oscar Bergal in the neck during an arrest operation in the Marble Hill neighborhood of the Bronx on October 8, 2026, while his five-year-old son was reportedly inside the vehicle.
Federal officials said the operation targeted Bergal because of his criminal history and alleged gang ties, claiming that he drove toward officers and posed a threat during the encounter.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani condemned the shooting, called for an end to ICE enforcement operations in the city, and said he had contacted President Donald Trump to discuss the incident.
The shooting sparked protests in the Bronx and Manhattan, where demonstrators demanded accountability and some confrontations with police occurred near the hospital where Bergal was receiving treatment.
The incident intensified tensions between New York officials and the Trump administration, as state leaders called for a transparent investigation while federal authorities defended the officers’ actions.
