ICE replaces contractor at largest detention camp after scrutiny of living conditions
ICE replaced Acquisition Logistics with Amentum Services after reports of overcrowding, medical neglect, and multiple deaths at Camp East Montana, the agency's largest detention center.
- An internal ICE document distributed this week shows U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is preparing to terminate its $1.2 billion contract for Camp East Montana.
- Earlier this year, health and safety problems at Camp East Montana emerged, with at least 14 measles cases detected, about 1,500 detainees remaining, and 60 federal detention standards violated.
- Built in weeks beside Fort Bliss, the camp features enormous white tents with open-top pods and contract language stating roughly two-week stays, while detainees and advocates alleged abuse.
- The Department of Homeland Security is reviewing the Camp East Montana contract with no decisions made, while Amentum Services Inc. won a separate contract for housing, medical care and transportation.
- The move comes as ICE deaths have risen, with at least 30 last year and nine this year, amid scrutiny over detention expansion and DHS's $1.2 billion warehouse plan.
