ICE folds on Romulus detention center less than 3 months after suit
ICE and DHS will sell the warehouse after a lawsuit and protests stalled the plan for a detention center that officials said was unsuitable.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement plans to sell a warehouse in Romulus, Michigan, reversing its earlier plan to convert the facility into an immigrant detention center.
In March, Attorney General Dana Nessel and the City of Romulus filed a federal lawsuit arguing the site was unsuitable due to its proximity to schools and residential neighborhoods.
The lawsuit alleged violations of the Administrative Procedure Act and that the facility lacked adequate infrastructure for 500 detainees and staff.
Pending a written agreement, the federal lawsuit remains active to ensure the government will never use the Cogswell Street site as a detention center.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer applauded the decision, while the Department of Homeland Security stated it is prioritizing existing detention space with state and county partners.
