NY High School Grad Detained by ICE Released
NEW YORK CITY, AUG 4 – Yeonsoo Go was detained despite a pending visa renewal, prompting protests from faith leaders and advocates who cite her lawful status and call for a fair review of her immigration case.
Yeonsoo Go, a 20-year-old South Korean student at Purdue University, was detained by ICE outside a Manhattan courthouse on July 31 and sent to a federal detention center in Louisiana.
Her arrest occurred during an immigration hearing aimed at renewing her legal religious worker dependent visa, despite ICE's claim that she remained in the country beyond the expiration of a visa that lapsed more than two years prior—a point her attorney contests.
Go's community, including her mother, an Episcopal priest in New York, Purdue University, and church groups in New York and South Korea, rallied for her release and condemned her detention conditions.
South Korea’s Foreign Ministry confirmed it coordinated with U.S. officials and offered consular support, while advocates noted that Go was detained for five days before being released to her family in New York on Monday night.
Go's case highlights tensions over immigration enforcement policies, prompting calls for a fair review of her status and raising concerns about ICE detention transparency and due process.
