ICE Breaks Daily Arrest Record in South Texas
ICE said the one-day sweep targeted criminal illegal foreign nationals and repeat reentry offenders, including suspects convicted of violent crimes and drug trafficking.
- Last month, ICE made the largest single-day arrest of 228 people in the Rio Grande Valley, with officials calling it the "highest single-day targeted arrests for the area of operations."
- The operation, conducted in partnership with federal, state, and local law enforcement, was "aimed at increasing public safety by arresting and removing criminal illegal aliens from our communities," ICE said.
- Among those detained were criminal foreign nationals with convictions for attempted kidnapping, sexual battery, and drug possession, including an alleged Paisas gang member. Many arrested face additional charges for illegally reentering the United States.
- Following a fatal shooting, Houston Mayor John Whitmire requested a 90-day moratorium on ICE enforcement actions, while Texas Gov. Greg Abbott directed Texas Rangers to investigate.
- A congressional field hearing is scheduled for the end of the month in Houston to address concerns surrounding the shooting. ICE encourages the public to report suspicious activity by calling 866-DHS-2-ICE.
