ICE Agents Will Have No Operational Role in Winter Olympics: Italy
ICE's Homeland Security Investigations will be confined to US diplomatic missions for security and intelligence roles only; Italian forces will handle all policing with 8,000 personnel deployed.
- Italy's interior minister Matteo Piantedosi said on Feb 4 that United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents will have no operational role at the Milan‑Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics and ICE’s Homeland Security Investigations will 'operate within US diplomatic missions only' with 'no executive function'.
- Following protests, officials stressed the agency's analytical support role as last week the US agency said it would aid the Department of State's Diplomatic Security Service against transnational criminal organisations.
- Officials say some 6,000 police plus nearly 2,000 military personnel will deploy across half a dozen sites from Milan to the Dolomites, supported by 170 vehicles and specialised units including bomb disposal experts.
- Piantedosi sought to reassure parliament by saying security and public order are ensured exclusively by our police forces, and ICE will not perform operational activities on our national territory, he added.
- Piantedosi noted it is standard practice to send security officials, citing Italy's deployment to Paris 2024 and compliance with a legally binding international agreement as world leaders, including US Vice‑President J.D. Vance, attend the Olympics.
