An Indian fighter jet crashes and both pilots are killed
CHURU DISTRICT, RAJASTHAN, JUL 09 – The crash caused a fire in nearby fields and marks the third Jaguar fighter jet accident this year, highlighting ongoing concerns over the aging fleet, officials said.
- A twin-seat Jaguar fighter jet operated by the Indian Air Force crashed on Wednesday at approximately 1:25 pm in a farmland area near Bhanoda village in Rajasthan's Churu district.
- The aircraft reportedly took off from Suratgarh air base with two pilots on board, though some reports mention Ambala as a possible origin, and the official mishap report is pending.
- Villagers notified police and Army officials, who arrived with fire tenders; responders discovered two severely damaged bodies near the crash site, thought to be those of the pilots.
- The Superintendent of Police, Jai Yadav, reported that two bodies were found though their identities have not yet been established, while the Indian Air Force has initiated a probe to ascertain the cause of the crash.
- This crash follows previous incidents involving Jaguar aircraft including a March crash near Ambala where the pilot ejected safely and an April crash in Gujarat that caused a fatality.
