Middle-class families face unlimited council tax rises under Labour

- The Treasury plans to revalue 2.4m properties across bands F, G and H, apply a surcharge to the top 300,000 by value, and consider a �600m 'mansion tax' to fund Labour-supporting towns.
- Tax Policy Associates estimates more than three-quarters of a �4bn revenue would come from band G households, according to the IFS modelling.
- There is no statutory limit on council tax hikes and Labour's multi-year funding settlement raises the prospect of repeated increases, while the Housing Department warned some local authorities may struggle and central government guidance will consider flexibility but refuse extra powers where taxpayers pay above average.
- Some Labour MPs warned that `Sir James Cleverly`, Shadow Housing Secretary, warned council tax could rise `more than six` in some areas each year, potentially reaching `9,120` by the end of the Parliament.
